Fernando Alegria, noted Chilean writer and scholar, wrote these words in the 1980 introduction to Heart Songs:

“Nina Serrano brightens everything she touches and everything she touches dances, sings, struggles and flowers among the people. Longshoremen? Longshoremen. Farmworkers? Farmworkers. But also dragons in a paper city, multicolored stars from the Year of the Rooster, rapid revolvers between sweet rice paper and heavy ginseng rabbits, but also the California farm workers , march under the banner of the Virgin of Guadalupe and the black and red eagle of don Pancho Villa, all the mustaches of don Emiliano Zapata, plus the cartridges and machine guns of Sandino, the white shirt and pants of Farabundo Marti, Roque Dalton’s smile amidst the bullets and the slow paced death of Neruda.”

Mary Rudge, Poet Laureate of the City of Alameda, wrote about Heart’s Journey:

“Nina Serrano’s poems center on the great adventure of being a woman.  From youthful visionary to ultimate wise woman, Nina’s poems and drawings take you through the intricate passages of life’s mysteries.  This intimate journey of the mind and heart is a book to cherish. One thinks of Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera and Che Guevara giving it their blessing. This is an adventure book of life itself, a woman’s life transcribed in strong, courageous, heartfelt poems.”
