Que Hacer: What is to Be Done?
(with Saul Landau and Raul Ruis) 1971, 90 mins., English and Spanish, Color
Que Hacer is spy story-musical feature film that brilliantly weaves documentary coverage of the Allende election and turmoil afterwards, with a fast-moving story of political intrigue. A young woman Peace Corps worker becomes involved with a mysterious American ‘businessman’ and subsequently joins with Chilean revolutionaries. This Brechtian treatment of the Allende election and the imperial politics that intervenes in the Chilean affairs features the songs and acting of Country Joe McDonald as well as President Allende himself. It was filmed on location during the historic elections of 1970.
After the Earthquake: Después del terremoto
(with Lourdes Portillo) 1979, 27 min., Spanish and English, BW
“The artistic style of these films [including After the Earthquake] provides the backdrop for the political content, enabling them to transcend the dichotomy between politics and art, content and form… Both films recognize the independent voice with which women can represent themselves.” — Artweek (April 1985).
After the Earthquake won the Krakow, Poland International Short Film Festival award. More info at http://www.lourdesportillo.com/.
